October is LGBT History Month

I have to admit, I don't know much about the achievements of gays and lesbians throughout history. Teachers didn't talk about the sexual orientation of Oscar Wilde, Tchaikovsky, or Marcel Proust when I was in school. If they had, I might have felt differently about being different; I might have realized that being gay would not limit the possibilities for my life but would enhance them.
This painting is something I did for myself. It's about the comfort that comes from feeling at home. It's also about how ordinary gay life can sometimes be. It's not all parades and discos, people!

Pride at Work

I'm proud to say that my company is making great strides to become a more diverse workplace. We now have groups for Hispanic, African-American, Asian Pacific, and LGBT employees in addition to groups for Young Professionals and Parents. I wrote and designed these four stickers for my peeps in the LGBT Resource Network to hand out at today's Diversity Fair. I hope that seeing these stickers around the building will remind our many gay employees that they are accepted and valued for who they are.

A Peek Into My Journal

Since it's the one place that I can write and make art that is completely unedited, my entries can be revealing, surprising, and woefully indecent. I just returned from a two-week trip to Shanghai and Hong Kong. Everywhere I turned, there was something amazing and inspiring to look at. Here are some samples from the hundreds of photos I took. No doubt, the things I saw and experienced in China will inspire my artwork in many ways.

I love to visit the Cleveland Museum of Art with or without my sketchbook. Sometimes I turn my brain off and just look. Other times I'm a scavenger looking for clues that can help me. This particular day I camped out in the Rodin sculpture atrium trying to remember how to see and draw. My notes are scattered and kind of embarrassing, but I wanted to remember the thoughts I had looking at the paintings that day.

I discovered months ago that my favorite time-suck, CafePress, prints custom bumper stickers. So now you can check out my artwork as I'm rollin' in my awesome tan Corolla. All the other mid-sized sedans wish they were as decked as my ride.

Sorry for the poor quality cell-phone pictures, but I didn't have time to get this one photographed before the show was hung. It's part of a group show of artists from the design studio where I work. I used acrylic and paper collage on canvas (18"x24"). I'm happy to report that it sold on the first day of the exhibit.

Kelly Travels to India

My sister Kelly was adopted into our family when she was just a baby. In a few months, she will make her first trip back to the country where she was born. The idea of my adorable little sister surrounded by the amazing food, culture, and sights of India is what inspired this illustration.

A Painting for a Friend
